Today, twenty years after that tragic day, we honor those who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks and who have been impacted by 9/11-related illnesses. Our members put themselves at significant risk to make the scene safe for police, firefighters and EMTs to do their jobs. They worked around the clock to restore natural gas, steam and electricity to lower Manhattan. More than 3,300 miles of primary cable was laid above ground as a temporary measure to re-energize the affected area allowing the New York Stock Exchange to re-open in only seven days, proving to the world that even a terrorist attack as catastrophic as this cannot keep us down.
As we remember the terrorist attacks of 9/11, we will never forget the day that changed our lives forever, also recognize all of the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice. To all the local 1-2 utility workers who participated in the response and restoration, thank you!
